Gyimah Gariba (one of Forbes “15 Young African Creatives Rebranding Africa”) takes us behind the scenes of his first created show, Big Blue, set to debut on CBC Kids.

Growing up in Ghana, Gyimah discovered his love of drawing while bringing his favorite cartoon characters to life. His distinct style has been praised by Forbes Magazine, who named him one of “15 Young African Creative’s Rebranding Africa” in 2015. He has a self-published Children’s book, The Little Black Cloud, and an independent comic book published by Shortbox called Navel Gazing.
Gyimah’s career started before he graduated from Sheridan College, when he joined the character design team for Black Dynamite.
Since then, he has worked on a variety of hit shows including Steven Universe, True and the Rainbow Kingdom and Justin Time GO!, where he was the lead character designer.
Gyimah’s clients range from musicians to sports broadcaster ESPN. He has also designed covers for Marvel Comics and worked to create promotional content for clothing and sportswear brand Adidas. In 2020, Gyimah was named one of Animation Magazine’s Rising Stars of Animation.
Most recently, Gyimah is the creator of Guru Studio’s newest animated original series, Big Blue, which features a diverse cast of human and animal underwater explorers on a zany mission to protect an underwater planet, and is set to air on CBC next year.
