Animation directors define the style of motion for a show or movie, guiding large teams of animators to focus an eclectic array of talents on creating a cohesive end product. Sounds easy enough, right?

We gather a roundtable of animation directors working on a variety of different projects at studios across Ontario to discuss their experience, swap stories and compare notes on the day-to-day duties of directing animation!

Caitlin Menard, Animation Director, Jam Filled Entertainment

Caitlin Menard is an Ottawa-based 3D animator and director, currently directing animation on Dino Ranch season 2. She graduated from Algonquin College in 2013 and worked as a 2D animator for four years before joining her first 3D production at Jam Filled. Since then, she's worked on The Polos, Kingdom Force, and Dino Ranch. In her spare time, Caitlin loves planning her next travel adventure.

Mel Olm, Animation Director, Brown Bag Films

Mel Olm is an Animation Director for Brown Bag Films, with 10+ years of experience within the animation industry. Her work includes roles as an Animator, Harmony Rigging Supervisor, Storyboard Revisionist and Animation Director for companies including Elliot Animation Inc, Guru Studio, and Yowza! Animation Corp., specializing in Harmony and Toon Boom Animation. Some of her credits include work on series like Ever After High (Mattel), Pig Goat Banana Cricket (Nickelodeon), Welcome to the Wayne (Nickelodeon), Charlotte (January Films), and Big Blue (Guru Studios).

Patrick Paradis, Animation Director, Atomic Cartoons

Patrick started his 20 year stint in animation in Halifax's imagination factories and has spent the last 12 years in Ottawa. Recently he has served as Animation Director on Little Demon (FXX/ShadowMachine) and Curious George: Cape Ahoy (Universal). He likes long walks on the moon and candle-lit effigies.

Ray Ocampo, Animation Director, Jam Filled Entertainment

Ray graduated from Ottawa's Algonquin College animation program in 1999. He began working as a traditional key animator on children's television series such as "Tales From The Cryptkeeper", and "Franklin The Turtle". In 2003, he started his career as a digital animator. He continued to work on kids shows such as "Carl Squared" and "The Cat In Ihe Hat". In the span of a decade, he had worked for half a dozen studios in Ottawa. producing work as a character designer, and traditional and digital animator. In 2011, he joined Jam Filled Entertainment as a character animator working on "Camp Lakebottom". He started work as an animation supervisor for Jam Filled in 2015 on "The Loud House", and continued to supervise until 2019. At this time, he became an animation director for Jam Filled. His has directed on "Final Space", "The Casagrandes", and is currently working on "Clone High".

Ray is a graduate from Ottawa's Algonquin College. He started work as a traditional key animator, then as a digital animator on children's television series. He is currently an animation director at Jam Filled Entertainment, having worked on "Final Space", "The Casagrandes" and "Clone High".

Spencer Moreland, Director of Programming, TAAFI

Based in Ottawa, Spencer is an independent animator and filmmaker. Since 2013, he has worked as an animator, writer, storyboard artist and director on a variety of projects big and small, with equal appreciation for the fancy big-studio projects, the weird, artsy stuff, and everything in between. Spencer's always got his radar up for new and exciting voices in animation, and he's eager to share his findings with the TAAFI audience in his new role as Director of Programming.
