The art of storytelling has become a big focus with emerging technologies. Dan Fill (Dark Slope), Steve Miller (Secret Location) and Leslie Klassen (Flipside) discuss how virtual reality (VR) opens up a world of storytelling possibilities that turn viewers into active participants of an experience. Analyzing narratives - our panel discusses the challenges of immersive storytelling.

Ana Serrano, Chief Digital Officer, Canadian Film Centre

Serrano is the chief digital officer of the Canadian Film Centre, and managing director of its media and entertainment technology accelerator IDEABOOST. She is an adjunct professor at OCADu, co-chair of the Open Democracy Project and their annual democracy summit, DemocracyXChange, and also sits on numerous boards including the Canadian Museum of Human Rights and the Centre for Mindfulness Studies. Serrano has received numerous awards from the digital media, film, and theatre industries around the world, including a DigiAward for Visionary of the Year from the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television, a Best Canadian Feature Film Award from the International Reel Asian Film Festival for her own transmedia production Prison Dancer: the Musical, and in 2018 was presented with the insignia as a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of Arts and Letters) by the French Government to recognize her significant contribution to furthering the arts in France and throughout the world.

Dan Fill, Co-Founder and COO, Dark Slope Studios

Dan is a co-founder and head of development for Dark Slope Studios, a start up focused on innovative new forms of animation production for warehouse scale free roam virtual reality experiences, goggle-based augmented reality and game engine driven linear animation. 

Dan is an award winning creator/producer who has recently moved back to Canada from Australia where he oversaw a production company Chocolate Liberation Front. As former head of multiplatform for ABC, Dan has worked on projects with Weta, BBC and Cartoon Network Europe. As former VP interactive at Decode Entertainment, Dan collaborated on projects for The Jim Henson Company, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, MTV as well as games for Steam and tablet.

Lesley Klassen, CEO and Co-Founder, Flipside

Lesley is the CEO and co-founder of Flipside XR, a real-time animation and XR broadcast company that is shaping the future of immersive live broadcast. Their mission is to build the tools artists need today to make the content of tomorrow. While at Flipside, Lesley has directed over a dozen VR applications and experiences, presented at Oculus Connect about the best practices in VR design, and helped build out the vision behind the future of immersive broadcast. Today they work with customers like SuperRTL, co-owned by Disney Television and Caffeine Studios, a joint venture with 21st Century Fox. In a prior life, Lesley was an improviser, video director, interactive designer and a synth player.

Steve Miller, Senior Creative Technologist, Secret Location

Steve is a director and senior creative technologist at Secret Location, where he leverages a multi-disciplinary background in creative technology to translate art and story to a variety of different media. His work has been recognized by numerous awards including the first digital Emmy, FITC, the Digi’s, the FWA, and the Canadian Screen Awards. He has been heavily involved in numerous virtual reality projects, and enjoys exploring and challenging the possibilities of the medium. Part time ice cream connoisseur.
