From the In-Between... with Larry Jacobs

Adriana Blake | Aug 30, 2021

Hello TAAFI friends and fans!

So, who’s excited about Nelvana’s 50th anniversary? That’s a lot of years of hard work and great content that has impacted many generations of children around the world!

Before our awesome 50 years of Nelvana talk and Q&A on August 31 at 7pm, here’s a little teaser of what’s to come! We interviewed animation director extraordinaire and Nelvana veteran Larry Jacobs and here’s what he had for us:

1. How did you get started at Nelvana?

I started in the autumn of 1977! Robin Budd did an intro for me. I started as an assistant animator on The Devil and Daniel Mouse. I assisted for two animators that were not Sheridan graduates, so their approach, although not entirely different, was a bit of an eye opener! I believe I learned more in that first year than three years at college! (not the college’s fault by the way).

2. What are some Nelvana projects you were (or are!) involved in that you’re the most proud of?

Creating and directing my own series called Birdz, which aired in 1998 on CBS. Developing and directing The Magic School Bus. Just finished The Dog and Pony Show, which had some pipeline challenges because we used montaged photo backgrounds. It has a successful and distinct look that I’m very happy with.

3. What’s an important thing you learned during your experience at Nelvana?

How to work in a collaborative environment. Through all the rough spots in production, and there are always rough spots in animation production, I always try to have fun and enjoy the people I’m working with.

4. Tell us a funny or memorable story from your time at Nelvana!

There’s too many stories and not enough space here!

Hand carrying a project that had been laid out on paper at Nelvava to Taiwan for animation and paint, supervising the special there and then doing the hand carry back home, buying two boxes of film negatives a seat on Air Canada. Mr. and Mrs. Box shared a seat.

Thank you so much, Larry!
